Bangkok is a very safe city, but do take your regular precautions, like protecting valuables as you would anywhere else. Pickpocketing isn’t as common as in major tourist destinations in Europe, but it does happen in public transportation and at the main attractions and the crowded markets.

In case of emergency, or to report rip-offs or theft, call the Tourist Assistance Center (tel: 1155) for English-speaking help (between the hours of 8am and midnight), or rely on your hotel staff.

Be aware of scams around the Grand Palace: If you’re told by a tuk tuk driver that the palace is closed and are offered a tour around the city instead, just ignore the “friendly” offer -- the palace is always open (until 3:30pm).

Female travelers aren’t likely to be harrassed in Bangkok.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has offices in Bangkok, connected to the tourist police. If you need to report scams or unfortunate situations like ludicrous bar surcharges, that’s who you should contact (telephone numbers: 1672 or 1155).

Gem scams, in which tourists are approached by a friendly stranger who takes them to a store and tricks them into buying bulk gems, are common. The con artist tells you that the gems can be resold in your home country for 100% profit, but you end up buying worthless pieces of glass. If you’re approached about any gem or jewelry deals, just ignore them.
