Khao San Road, Bangkok

Everything calls for tourists' attention on Khao San Road

Yes, it’s touristy but it’s also a place unlike any other in the world. Just 412 meters long (around 1350 ft), this neon-lit street started as a backpacker hub in the 1980s, and was placed on everyone’s Bangkok itinerary in the 1990s, after the publication of Alex Garland’s novel “The Beach” and the release of the movie that followed, whose opening scenes are set in one of the street’s cheap hotels. The low-cost accommodation is still there, but most spaces have now been taken over by small tourist-friendly shops, cafés, bars, and restaurants.

It’s a lively, melting-pot of a place throughout the day, with hair braiding services, carts offering fruit, juices, and local specialties together with some not-so-appetizing foods, and stalls selling secondhand goods and souvenirs.

It’s also one of the top destinations at night, when the daytime market becomes an all-night party.
